India Achieves Milestone with Akash-NG User Trials Success

Breakthrough in Indigenous Air Defence

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully completes user evaluation trials of the Akash-NG missile system. Therefore, this milestone paves the way for its induction into the Indian Armed Forces. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulates DRDO, Indian Air Force (IAF), and industry partners on this achievement.

During the trials, Akash-NG missiles intercept aerial targets across multiple ranges and altitudes. In addition, the system handles near-boundary low-altitude threats and long-range high-altitude engagements effectively. As a result, it demonstrates operational versatility in real-world scenarios.

Advanced Features of Akash-NG Missile

Akash-NG equips itself with an indigenous Radio Frequency (RF) seeker and a solid rocket motor. However, this setup counters diverse aerial threats like fighter aircraft and cruise missiles precisely. The missile’s second-stage dual-pulse motor enhances speed and resilience against saturation attacks.

Moreover, the system integrates an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Multi-Function Radar (MFR) for detecting low radar cross-section targets. An electro-optical targeting system (EOTS) tracks up to 45 km, while an optical proximity fuze resists electromagnetic interference. Therefore, Akash-NG operates in all weather conditions with Ku-band active radar seeker technology.

Production involves Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL). In addition, DRDO labs design key subsystems like the Command and Control Unit and Missile Launch Vehicle (MLV). As a result, the project aligns with India’s self-reliance goals under Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Superior Performance Specifications

Akash-NG extends its interception range to 70-80 km, far beyond the 25-30 km of earlier Akash variants. It engages up to ten targets simultaneously, boosting kill probability significantly. Furthermore, deployment proves swift: ready-to-fire in under 20 minutes, with single missile launch in 10 seconds.

The system operates from 20° to 70° elevation across 360° azimuth, suiting mobile combat environments. Reloading two canister stacks takes about ten minutes. In addition, its lighter design compared to ramjet predecessors improves reaction times.

Development started in September 2016 with ₹470 crore funding. Therefore, it reduces ground footprint for better deployability. Recent stock surges in Bharat Dynamics reflect market confidence post-trials.

Trial History and Validation

The maiden flight occurred on 25 January 2021 from Chandipur’s Integrated Test Range (ITR), Odisha. Subsequent tests in July 2021 confirmed manoeuvrability against high-speed targets. In 2023, trials targeted Meggitt Banshee drones for low RCS threats.

January 2024 validated low-altitude intercepts, while June 2025 added EOTS guidance off Odisha’s coast. However, these user trials, conducted recently, meet all preliminary Services Qualitative Requirements (PSQR). Senior DRDO scientists and IAF representatives witness the success.

Path to Induction and Strategic Impact

These trials clear the final hurdle for Akash-NG induction, primarily into IAF and Army. As successor to Akash-Prime, it offers superior range, speed, and mobility. In addition, it strengthens India’s layered air defence against regional threats.

The project fits the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP). Therefore, it rivals global systems like US Patriot in cost-effectiveness. Chairman DRDO praises teams for advancing indigenous technology.

India monitors export potential amid paused Brazil talks. However, successes like Akash exports to Armenia and Vietnam highlight appeal. As a result, Akash-NG elevates India’s medium-range SAM stature worldwide.
