Ladakh Lt Governor Imposes Curfew in Leh After Mob Attempts to Burn CRPF Personnel

Referring to the earlier report on the violent protests in Ladakh demanding Sixth Schedule protections and statehood, fresh developments indicate that the clashes turned more violent on September 24, 2025, after a prolonged hunger strike led by activist Sonam Wangchuk.

Trigger for Escalation

It is reported that the immediate trigger for the protests was the hospitalisation of two elderly hunger strikers, which caused frustration and led to staged shutdowns and demonstrations in Leh. The protests escalated when the youth wing of the Leh Apex Body called for a mass gathering, resulting in stone-pelting at police and administrative offices.

Violent Confrontation

Security forces resorted to teargas and baton charges to control the crowds. Police firing was reported after some protesters attacked security forces and attempted to set fire to CRPF personnel inside their vehicle.

This confrontation tragically resulted in four to five fatalities and multiple injuries, including police personnel.

BJP Office and Vehicles Torched

The BJP office in Leh was set ablaze, along with several police and government vehicles. Authorities swiftly imposed a curfew and prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS to prevent further gatherings and unrest.

Allegations of Conspiracy

Local officials and the Lieutenant Governor have described the violence as part of a conspiracy, noting the use of social media toolkits and tactics reminiscent of recent riots in Bangladesh and Nepal, allegedly driven by Gen-Z youthfrustrated by unemployment and stalled political demands.

Core Demands of Protesters

Protests remain centred on the call for statehood and a constitutional Sixth Schedule status, with talks scheduled for October 6 to address these demands.

Security Measures and Appeal for Peace

Security forces continue to be deployed in strength to maintain order, while prominent leaders and activists in the region have issued calls for peace.

This update underlines the tense atmosphere and ongoing volatility following the initial incidents covered in the earlier report.
