Karur, Tamil Nadu – September 26, 2025: At least 38 people, including children and women, lost their lives in a horrific stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur district. The incident happened at around 7:15 PM when a massive crowd, vastly exceeding permitted limits, surged uncontrollably leading to panic, fainting, and deadly crushing.
The rally, organized by Tamil Vetria Kazhagam (TVK), drew an estimated 30,000 to 35,000 attendees despite permissions granted for only 10,000. The overcrowding was worsened by Vijay’s six-hour delay, causing restlessness. As Vijay addressed the crowd, panic spread, triggering the stampede that claimed 10 children and 17 women among the dead. Over 60 injured individuals are receiving treatment in nearby hospitals.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed grief and announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each victim’s family. Police and emergency response teams struggled to maintain order and provide medical aid as ambulances faced difficulties navigating the dense crowd. Vijay stopped his speech and threw water bottles to soothe people amid the chaos.
The Union Home Ministry has requested a detailed report from the Tamil Nadu government, while political leaders across India, including Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, have extended condolences. The incident has ignited debates on crowd control safety and political rally protocols across the state.
Authorities have launched investigations into the event’s organization and crowd management failures. The tragedy highlights the urgent need for stricter adherence to safety regulations during large political gatherings to prevent future loss of lives.
