Russia Successfully Tests Nuclear-Powered Burevestnik Missile with ‘Unlimited’ Range

Russia has completed a successful test of its groundbreaking nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile, President Vladimir Putin announced on October 26, 2025. The missile achieved an unprecedented flight of approximately 14,000 kilometers (8,700 miles) over 15 hours, showcasing its revolutionary nuclear propulsion technology, according to General Valery Gerasimov, Russia’s chief of general staff.

Known by NATO as SSC-X-9 Skyfall, the Burevestnik missile is designed to have a nearly unlimited range and a highly unpredictable flight path, which Putin claims renders it invulnerable to any current or future missile defence systems. Putin, appearing in military camouflage, hailed this weapon as a unique strategic asset that enhances Russia’s nuclear deterrence capabilities.

The missile’s successful test marks a pivotal stage in Russia’s military modernization, with preparations underway to integrate this advanced weapon into its armed forces. Gerasimov emphasized its nuclear engine provides prolonged flight endurance and superior evasion capabilities against defense technologies.

This development signals Russia’s commitment to maintaining strategic superiority amidst ongoing geopolitical challenges, especially in the context of heightened tensions in Ukraine and broader global security dynamics. Despite skepticism from Western experts about the missile’s reliability and environmental impact, Russia remains focused on advancing its next-generation nuclear arsenal.

The Burevestnik project, despite earlier setbacks including a fatal 2019 explosion during testing, continues to represent a critical component of Russia’s strategic military innovations, underlining the nation’s drive for advanced weapons systems capable of circumventing global defenses.

The missile test aligns with recent drills of Russia’s nuclear forces, including launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles and strategic bombers, underscoring Moscow’s emphasis on strategic readiness and nuclear deterrence.

This comprehensive achievement illustrates Russia’s continued investment in transformative military technology intended to shape future warfare and deterrence frameworks.
