Nepal’s Gen Z Revolution: Ex-Chief Justice Sushila Karki "Expected" to be the Interim PM, Praises PM Modi

Kathmandu / New Delhi, September 11, 2025 — Amid widespread protests by young generation, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has accepted the call to serve as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister. She has expressed warm regard for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying, “I have a very good impression of Modi ji,” while pledging to rebuild trust, honour protest victims, and strengthen ties with India.

From Judiciary to Interim Governance

Karki, 72, first made history as Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice, serving from 2016 to 2017. When mass demonstrations by Gen Z ousted the government of KP Sharma Oli, protest leaders nominated her to lead during a transitional period. She confirmed her readiness to accept that role and stated that citizens—especially the youth—had placed their faith in her leadership.

The Gen Z Movement & Its Demands

What began as outrage over government censorship of social media platforms quickly escalated into a broad anti-corruption crusade that demanded systemic political reform. Protesters decried cronyism, lack of transparency, and poor governance. The movement, largely led by younger Nepalese citizens, emphasised accountability and change. At least 30 people died and over 1,000 were injured during clashes when security forces opened fire, according to official sources.

Priorities for Interim Rule

In her new capacity, Karki has declared that her first responsibility will be to honour victims of violence during the protests. She has also promised steps toward rebuilding institutions, restoring public trust, and initiating reforms that address youth concerns. She stressed the urgency of political renewal and bringing stability to Kathmandu through inclusive dialogue and citizen engagement.

India-Nepal Relations: Respect and Expectations

Karki spoke warmly about India’s longstanding role in supporting Nepal, saying that the country holds immense respect and affection for its neighbor. Her praise of Prime Minister Modi underlines a desire to maintain strong bilateral ties. Observers believe that under her interim leadership, New Delhi-Kathmandu relations may see renewed cooperation, particularly in areas such as trade, infrastructure, education, and security.

Challenges Ahead

Despite her popularity, Karki steps into governance during turbulent times. Nepal remains under restrictions in several Kathmandu districts, with curfews and heavy military presence. The country’s political institutions have been shaken. Karki will have to balance expectations for rapid change with the realities of entrenched bureaucratic inertia. She must also navigate diplomatic sensitivities, both internally and with neighboring countries like India.

Implications for Nepal’s Future

Her acceptance as interim Prime Minister may mark a turning point in Nepal’s political history. If she succeeds in guiding reforms and ensuring inclusive governance, it could restore faith in public institutions and provide a blueprint for peaceful transitions under popular demand. Conversely, failure could deepen divisions and provoke further unrest.
