Global Peace Index 2025 Reports State Based Conflicts at Highest Level Since World War II Amid Rising Global Tensions: Top 10 Safest Countries

Global Peace Index 2025 Reports: Top 10 Safest Countries

The 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI) reveals a sharp decline in global peacefulness, with state-based conflicts reaching their highest number since World War II. According to the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), there are currently 59 active state-based conflicts worldwide, accompanied by 152,000 conflict-related deaths recorded in 2024, marking the most violent year in recent memory.

The report highlights “The Great Fragmentation” — an era defined by escalating geopolitical rivalry, middle power assertiveness, and the internationalization of conflicts. In 2024, 78 countries were involved in conflicts beyond their own borders, reflecting the growing complexity and spread of global confrontations.

Key findings include the largest number of countries experiencing over 1,000 internal conflict deaths since 1999, along with intensifying economic ramifications. The global economic impact of violence is estimated at $19.97 trillion, equivalent to 11.6% of global GDP, while military expenditure reached an astounding $2.7 trillion.

This deteriorating peace landscape is fueled by a combination of factors: rising geopolitical tension, technological shifts towards asymmetric warfare, and increasing debt burdens in fragile economies. The number of globally influential countries has nearly tripled since the Cold War, adding to the complexity of international relations.

The report underscores the urgent need for renewed focus on peacebuilding, governance reform, and diplomatic engagement to prevent ongoing conflicts from escalating further. While some countries and regions have seen improved peacefulness, the overall trajectory remains downward, stressing the importance of global cooperation to restore stability.

With peace at its lowest recorded level since the inception of the Index in 2007, the 2025 Global Peace Index serves as a sobering alert to the growing challenges the world faces in maintaining peace and security in an increasingly fragmented international order.

The Global Peace Index (GPI) 2025 report not only highlights the escalating global tensions and rising state-based conflicts but also ranks nations based on their peacefulness across various indicators such as levels of violence, conflict, incarceration, and militarization. While the world faces unprecedented challenges, several countries continue to maintain high levels of peace, stability, and security.

The Top 10 Most Peaceful Countries in the 2025 Global Peace Index are:

  1. Iceland

  2. Ireland

  3. Austria

  4. New Zealand

  5. Switzerland

  6. Singapore

  7. Portugal

  8. Denmark

  9. Slovenia

  10. Finland

These nations excel in governance, social safety, and low levels of domestic and international conflict, making them models of peace in a fragmented and turbulent world.
