Noida International Airport at Jewar Inaugurated, Transforming NCR Connectivity

Noida International Airport Jewar terminal inauguration by PM Modi

Noida International Airport Jewar Inaugurated: A Game-Changing Moment for NCR

By Tattvam News Today, March 28, 2026 | In a landmark moment for India’s infrastructure push, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase-I of the Noida International Airport, marking the operational debut of Uttar Pradesh’s most ambitious greenfield aviation project. Located along the Yamuna Expressway in Jewar, Gautam Buddha Nagar district, the airport is set to emerge as a vital second gateway for the Delhi-NCR region, easing congestion at Indira Gandhi International Airport while catalysing economic growth across western Uttar Pradesh.

From Vision to Reality: Two Decades in the Making

The journey of the Noida International Airport dates back to 2001, when then Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Rajnath Singh proposed the “Taj International Aviation Hub” near Greater Noida. The project initially struggled due to regulatory hurdles, including proximity restrictions linked to IGI operations and policy protections for existing airport operators.

The proposal briefly shifted to Agra before gaining renewed momentum in 2014. Formal approval came in 2015, followed by in-principle clearance from the Ministry of Civil Aviation in 2018. The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) was appointed as the nodal agency, tasked with land acquisition, planning, and integration into a larger aerotropolis vision.

To streamline execution, the state government established Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) in 2018 to oversee the project under a public-private partnership model.

Breaking Barriers: Policy Shift and Global Bidding

A major turning point for the Noida International Airport came with policy reforms that addressed the monopoly concerns of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL). The operator had a right of first refusal for airports within a 150-km radius, which had long restricted competition.

In 2019, the government introduced a transparent global bidding process that effectively neutralised this constraint. Flughafen Zürich AG emerged as the winning bidder with a record ₹400.97 per passenger premium, surpassing competitors including GMR and Adani Group entities.

This move ensured a level playing field and opened the project to international expertise and 100% foreign direct investment.

Zurich Consortium and Project Execution

Following its successful bid, Flughafen Zürich AG established Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd (YIAPL) as the project’s execution arm under a 40-year DBFOT concession.

The terminal design integrates global expertise with Indian cultural elements, developed by a consortium including Haptic, Nordic, Grimshaw, and STUP. Civil construction was awarded to Tata Projects in June 2022, with sustainability targets including net-zero emissions.

YEIDA played a central role in acquiring over 1,300 hectares of land and resolving rehabilitation challenges. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the project gained consistent policy backing.

Former CEO Dr. Arun Vir Singh, IAS was instrumental in driving execution, overseeing land acquisition, master planning, and connectivity integration. His successor, Rakesh Kumar Singh, IAS has accelerated auxiliary infrastructure, including expressways, metro connectivity, and logistics systems.

Phase-Wise Expansion: Building a Global Aviation Hub

The Noida International Airport is being developed in four phases with a total projected investment of approximately ₹29,561 crore.

Phase-I, now operational, has a capacity of 12 million passengers annually, featuring a 3,900-metre runway and a terminal spanning around 100,000 square metres. Future phases will expand capacity to 30, 50, and ultimately 70 million passengers per annum, with long-term projections reaching up to 120 million by 2050.

Runway capacity will also scale progressively from one to six, positioning the airport among the largest aviation hubs globally.

Overcoming Delays Without Cost Escalation

Construction of the Noida International Airport began in June 2022, with initial completion targeted for September 2024. However, the timeline experienced multiple revisions due to construction challenges, supply constraints, and regulatory approvals.

Key clearances, including the aerodrome licence granted on March 6, 2026, paved the way for final commissioning. Despite a delay of approximately 17 months, authorities have maintained that Phase-I remained within budgeted costs.

State support, including ₹750 crore allocated in the 2026–27 Uttar Pradesh budget, helped sustain progress during critical phases.

Economic Engine for Western Uttar Pradesh

The Noida International Airport is expected to transform the Yamuna Expressway corridor into a thriving aerotropolis. The region already hosts emerging sectors such as electronics manufacturing, semiconductor proposals, medical device parks, and renewable energy hubs.

With cargo handling projected to scale up to 2–3 million tonnes annually, the airport will significantly enhance export logistics for North India. Reduced transportation costs and improved connectivity are likely to attract global investors and boost industrial output.

Major infrastructure projects, including expressways, high-speed rail proposals, and multi-modal transport hubs, are being aligned to support seamless movement of passengers and goods.

Strengthening NCR’s Aviation Capacity

One of the most immediate impacts of the Noida International Airport will be the decongestion of Indira Gandhi International Airport, currently one of the busiest airports in the world.

With advanced passenger facilities such as self-baggage drop, automated systems, and multiple aerobridges, the new airport is designed to meet global standards while accommodating rapid traffic growth in the NCR region.

Commercial operations are expected to begin in mid-April 2026, initially focusing on domestic and cargo services before expanding to international routes.

A Launchpad for Uttar Pradesh’s Growth Story

The inauguration of the Noida International Airport is more than just the opening of a new airport—it represents a strategic shift in India’s infrastructure and economic trajectory.

Backed by strong governance, international collaboration, and long-term planning, the project stands as a symbol of Uttar Pradesh’s transformation into an industrial and logistics powerhouse.

As operations commence, the airport is poised to generate lakhs of jobs, boost regional GDP, and redefine connectivity for millions.

With this milestone, India signals its readiness to compete on the global aviation stage—firmly positioning the NCR as a world-class gateway for trade, travel, and growth.
