IPL 2026 Playoffs: GT’s Rise, Punjab Kings Collapse & RR’s Dramatic Qualification

RR qualified for IPL 2026 Playoffs. The four teams are RCB, GT, SRH and RR.

IPL 2026 Playoffs Analysis: GT’s Rise, Punjab Kings Collapse and RR’s Dramatic Qualification

May 24, 2026: When we published our earlier IPL 2026 Playoffs analysis, Underdog Equation Analysis After Halfway Mark , nearly 4 weeks ago, Gujarat Titans were still fighting to stay relevant in the playoff race. Punjab Kings were leading the table with confidence, while teams like CSK and DC remained mathematically alive.

At that stage, GT needed almost everything to go right.

They required a near-perfect second half of the season, significant Net Run Rate improvement, and crucial slips from teams above them. What looked unlikely a few weeks ago has now become reality. IPL 2026 delivered one of the sharpest momentum shifts seen in recent seasons.

Punjab Kings lost control at the worst possible moment, Gujarat Titans surged into the top two, and Rajasthan Royals calmly secured the final playoff spot during the final leg of the league stage. Meanwhile, both Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders were still hoping RR would lose against Mumbai Indians, which could have reopened the qualification race for them.

The Second Half Changed Everything

The IPL league stage often rewards fast starts, but playoff qualification usually depends on how teams handle pressure during the final stretch.

That is exactly where Gujarat Titans separated themselves from Punjab Kings.

GT built momentum steadily through disciplined cricket. Their victories against major rivals completely changed the playoff picture. Instead of relying on individual brilliance, they started winning through collective execution.

Punjab Kings, however,  moved in the opposite direction. Their aggressive style brought early success, but pressure exposed weaknesses that eventually cost them qualification.

Punjab Kings: A Season That Slipped Away

Punjab Kings looked like genuine title contenders during the first half of IPL 2026.

They played fearless cricket, attacked aggressively in the powerplay, and maintained a healthy Net Run Rate. For several weeks, they looked certain to finish in the top four.

But the second half exposed recurring problems.

Top-Order Dependence

Punjab relied heavily on explosive starts. Whenever the top order failed, the middle order struggled to stabilise innings or build controlled chases.

Inconsistent Middle Overs

Several matches slipped away because PBKS failed to convert promising starts into match-winning totals. Partnerships broke too frequently under pressure.

Bowling Concerns at the Death

Close contests repeatedly turned against Punjab during the final overs. Their inability to control scoring in death overs became a major weakness during crunch games.

Pressure and Momentum Loss

Perhaps the biggest issue was psychological. Once defeats began piling up, Punjab failed to recover momentum. Confidence dropped visibly during must-win fixtures.

Even a late victory against Lucknow Super Giants was not enough to save their campaign.

Punjab Kings eventually finished outside the playoff spots while Rajasthan Royals capitalised on the opportunity with better finishing consistency.

Gujarat Titans: The Best Second-Half Team

No team managed the second half of IPL 2026 better than Gujarat Titans.

Their rise was built on structure, patience, and tactical discipline.

GT improved in every department, including smarter chases, better bowling execution, controlled batting partnerships, improved pressure handling, and tactical captaincy from Shubman Gill.

Their victories against fellow contenders proved decisive. Every major win not only earned points but also strengthened their Net Run Rate significantly.

By the end of the league stage, GT had transformed from underdogs into one of the strongest title contenders.

Their qualification for Qualifier 1 perfectly validated the “Underdog Equation” prediction made earlier in the season.

The Four Teams That Qualified

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)

RCB emerged as one of the most balanced teams of IPL 2026.

They may not have dominated every match, but they consistently handled pressure situations better than most teams. Their bowling unit remained disciplined while the batting lineup delivered stability throughout the tournament.

Key Performers
  • Virat Kohli continued delivering crucial runs in pressure matches.
  • Rajat Patidar provided calm leadership and middle-order stability.
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar became one of the season’s most effective wicket-taking bowlers.
  • Josh Hazlewood delivered important breakthroughs during both powerplays and death overs.

RCB finished at the top thanks to superior Net Run Rate among the leading teams.

Gujarat Titans (GT)

GT became the strongest second-half side of IPL 2026.

Key Performers
  • Sai Sudharsan emerged as one of the best batters of the tournament with consistency and composure.
  • Shubman Gill combined elegant batting with sharp captaincy.
  • Rashid Khan once again delivered crucial breakthroughs during pressure situations.
  • Kagiso Rabada strengthened the pace attack with impactful spells.
  • Mohammed Siraj provided important early wickets throughout the campaign.

GT’s biggest strength was collective contribution. Different players stepped up in different situations, making them extremely difficult to stop.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)

SRH remained the most explosive batting side of the season.

Their aggressive approach sometimes created inconsistency, but it also made them one of the most dangerous knockout teams.

Key Performers
  • Heinrich Klaasen dominated middle overs with destructive hitting.
  • Abhishek Sharma maintained one of the highest strike rates among openers.
  • Ishan Kishan delivered several momentum-shifting innings.
  • Pat Cummins balanced leadership responsibilities with important bowling performances.

If SRH’s batting clicks in knockout matches, they can overpower any bowling attack in the tournament.

Rajasthan Royals (RR)

Rajasthan Royals may not have looked dominant throughout the season, but they delivered when qualification pressure peaked. That composure ultimately made the difference.

Key Performers
  • Vaibhav Sooryavanshi emerged as one of IPL 2026’s breakout stars with fearless batting.
  • Riyan Parag played an important leadership role while contributing crucial runs.
  • Sanju Samson delivered stabilising innings during difficult phases.
  • Ravi Bishnoi produced key middle-over breakthroughs in important victories.

RR stayed alive because they handled high-pressure situations better than Punjab Kings during the final stretch.

What to Expect in the Playoffs

The IPL 2026 playoffs bring together four teams with completely different identities and strengths, making this one of the most unpredictable knockout stages in recent years.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru enter the playoffs as arguably the most balanced side of the tournament, combining batting depth with disciplined bowling performances throughout the season. Gujarat Titans, on the other hand, arrive with the strongest momentum after producing the most impressive turnaround of the second half. Sunrisers Hyderabad remain the most explosive batting unit in the competition and possess the ability to dismantle any bowling attack within a few overs if their aggressive approach clicks. Rajasthan Royals step into the playoffs as fearless underdogs, carrying little pressure but enough match-winners to trouble every opponent.

The Qualifier 1 clash between RCB and GT is expected to be one of the defining contests of IPL 2026, with both teams entering the knockout stage full of confidence, form, and tactical depth.

However, IPL history has repeatedly shown that momentum can shift instantly once knockout cricket begins. This season itself has demonstrated that early dominance and league-stage table positions ultimately matter very little if teams fail to maintain composure during the most crucial phase of the tournament.
